In my last post a gave a brief tutorial on using niche shopping sites and Google’s keyword tool to find niches to target. Today I wanted to delve into it a little deeper and give some more tips when you’re researching the shopping sites. The last time I used home depot as an example of a niche shopping site that you can get keyword ideas from.
There are tons of different products that people search for and a ton of different niches. What you are looking for when it comes to building your Adsense sites it the volume that the keyword you are targeting gets, the competition level and how many marketers may be advertising for the keyword you are targeting. Keep in mind that the larger the niche is the more advertisers that will likely be using Google to advertise their websites.
I begin finding niches by brainstorming things that I have around my house. In my office I have a printer, computer, desk, lamp, bookshelves, chair to name a few items. My living has a sofa, television, side tables, TV stand among other things. Now I will do a search in Google to see what authority niche sites sell some of the products that I have in my home.
I decided to do a search for the term computer desk and the first site that comes up is http://computerdesk.com
The website gives me several keywords that I can further research using Google’s keyword tool to see how many searches each one gets. If I were making an authority site in the computer desk niche I would build it based on the information that the computer desk website has already provided for me. Again, I like to start with websites that have already done some of the work for me.
Inside the Google keyword tool I input the keyword glass desk. I see that that term alone get 2400 exact searches per month and there are also over 300 other keywords which pertain to the term glass desk. This niche could very well be a winner as I could probably find 25 to 30 keywords making up a monthly search volume between 5000 and 10000 keywords a month with little competition. I also see that the average CPC for each keyword is above a dollar.
I could build a highly themed authority site based on glass computer desks and it could be a big winner for me. Of course I would have to also delve deeper into each keyword and see what the competition on Google looks likes.
Let’s try the same thing with the lamp niche. A search for the term lamp brings up the lamps plus website. This website turns up several other sub niches that I may be interested in targeting and creating sub niche authority sites based on the keywords.
The term floor lamps gets nearly 50,000 searches a month in Google. Now I’m sure that the keyword floor lamp would be difficult to dominate based on the search volume alone. However I could target several lesser searched keywords in the floor lamp niche and probably be successful based on the sheer number of people who search for floor lamps monthly.
This research takes me a few minutes to conduct and I can come up with hundreds of potential niches to target in the shopping arena.
Tomorrow I’ll show you how to choose which keywords to build your sites around. I’ll be using all free tools to find the keywords to target although there are inexpensive keyword tools available that will speed up the process.
